Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve Review

TOS's THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS EVE - now available for the first time on VHS and DVD - is a unique fantasy trip through the magic of Christmas. Narrated by award-winning actor Ossie Davis, the production takes us on a journey of a runaway little girl's decision to return to her family after she enters a rundown theater for shelter and encounters an old caretaker who guides her on her journey. This magical story - which features appearances from Atlantic recording artists Jewel and Michael Crawford - was filmed entirely on location at the newly refurbished and historic Loews Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, New Jersey, and includes performances of such tracks as "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy," "Christmas Canon," "Music Box Blues," "Promises To Keep," and "This Christmas Day,".

Wow Christmas: Green Specifications

Christian artists and Christmas music go together like milk and cookies left for Santa. But for every cold, delicious glass of milk there's a stale cookie. Same can be said for WOW Christmas. There are plenty of traditional renderings like the delightful "Jingle Bell Rock" from Point of Grace, who could sing pages out of a phonebook and make it sound like the holidays; Zoegirl's "What Child Is This?"; Casting Crowns' "Away In A Manger"; Matthew West's "Let It Snow"; and, Mark Schultz's "The First Noel." For a different spin on the classics, check out Rebecca St. James' "Hark The Herald Angels Sing," otherwordly and strangely appealing; Tobymac's reggae-tinged "O Come All Ye Faithful"; Relient K's "Deck The Halls," which holds just enough energetic chutzpah to escape any charges of irreverency; and Bethany Dillon's smoldering jazzy take on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." New classics here give us a smile like Newsong's "The Christmas Shoes", David Crowder's south-of-the-border "Feliz Navidad," and Jars of Clay's ethereal "Little Drummer Boy." As for those overbaked cookies--FFH's close-but-no-cigar reworking of "Do You Hear What I Hear" or Jump 5's beat-silly "Sleigh Ride" will still be on the plate when Santa splits town. --Michael Lyttle

Christmas Cookies Specifications

Just when you thought the Oak Ridge Boys were all out of acorns, something whimsical and significant this way comes. These long standing kings of main street country have wrapped up a great little package of holiday merry making that will draw chuckles and occasionally dampen eyes. The title track explains why one guy savors his wife’s Christmas cookies all year long (a fattening recipe for a happy marriage, in other words), and "Uncle Luther Make the Stuffin'" is a good old novelty tune about the family gathered a little too comofrtably for the holiday. Of course they flirt with the maudlin on a few tracks (how can you not at this most sentimental time of the year?). But even those tracks--especially "Ordinary Days" that sounds like a well crafted Jimmy Buffet tune written for a movie version for "Tuesdays with Morrie"--sound right at home next to the Christmas classics like "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Jingle Bells," played here in hoedown time with dobros, guitars and fiddles a-blazing. In the familiar harmonies of the four Ridges, this album will be a welcome addition in their fans’ collection. For everyone else, it will come as a mild and satisfying revelation. --Martin Keller
